When you arrive for an appointment, a client service representative will ask you a few questions pertinent to your pet’s visit as well as record your pet’s weight. The information collected will then be distributed to our veterinary technician and doctor health care team. While they prepare for your appointment, you are free to browse through our brochures, pamphlets, and displays on a number of topics and services relevant to pet owners or watch our informative slide show about our many services, pet care information, and veterinary news.

When you and your pet are ready to leave, our client service representatives will review your invoice with you and answer any questions you might have. This is also a great time to make future appointments for medical, dental, or boarding care. Ahwatukee Animal Care Hospital’s four examination rooms, like all other areas of the hospital, are designed to offer the best possible care for your pet. During your brief wait to see your doctor, watch a video or slide show, browse through our Doggie Day Care book, our Hospital Services Book, or read a magazine. You will notice that each of these rooms is well-equipped with everything the doctor will need to conduct an exam, allowing you to be present while your pet is examined. If your pet requires tests or treatments, they will be escorted by one of our veterinary technicians to the nearby treatment area and returned to you promptly.

A client service representative or a veterinary technician will escort you and your pet from the lobby into an examination room for your scheduled appointment. We encourage you to bring a list of your questions to ensure any concerns you may have are addressed. Typically, a veterinary technician will begin your appointment by clarifying the reason(s) for your visit, obtaining your pet’s body temperature, and providing information about services and/or products that may benefit your pet.

Next, your doctor will evaluate your pet’s health condition through a complete examination and discussion of your pet’s health history, behavior, and current concerns.if you have questions, do not hesitate to ask your doctor. Together, you and your veterinarian will discuss your pet’s health and decide on any treatment, if necessary. Once you are satisfied that your concerns and/or questions have been addressed, any procedures that may need to be performed, including administering vaccinations or medications, conducting additional diagnostics, ear cleaning, and nail trimming, will then be completed.

At the conclusion of your appointment, the veterinary technician will escort you and your pet back to the lobby and reception area and will assist in coordinating scheduling future appointments, finalize any retail purchases, or hold onto your pet so that your hands are free to carry out payment.

After you leave our hospital, please know that we are only a phone call away. We are always happy to address any future concerns or needs.

Treatment Area

Our treatment area is actually comprised of two rooms – our large treatment room and our X-ray and ultrasound room. The treatment areas are utilized for a variety of medical and dental procedures including professional dental examinations and professional dental cleanings, post-operative examinations, evaluation of hospitalized patients, collection of specimen samples, emergency care, medication administration, a variety of other treatment procedures, and diagnostics (i.e. ultrasounds, digital x-rays, EKG, ECG, etc.).

Our hospital treatment area is the place where the more complex procedures are performed. This is the place where animals are prepped for surgery, blood is drawn, and simple anesthetic procedures take place. This is also the location of our intensive care unit (ICU. Animals requiring constant observation are located here where the doctors and veterinary technicians are able to keep a constant eye on their condition.

Minor surgeries performed in this area include ear cleaning, placing urinary catheters, abscess treatment, ear hematoma repair, laceration repair, and a variety of other medical procedures and minor surgical procedures. These treatments can be performed the same day your pet is seen and, often, your pet is able to go home in just a few hours.

We have veterinary technicians designated to the treatment area at all times pets are present, ensuring that all pets are cared for promptly, efficiently, and safely. Our experienced veterinary technicians are well trained in all aspects of veterinary medicine including blood draws, fluid treatment, surgical assistance, and bandage application.

Dental Care Center - Ahwatukee Animal Care Hospital

Dental Care Center

At Ahwatukee Animal Care Hospital, we believe dental hygiene is one of the most important aspects of a pet’s health. Our health care team is highly trained in treating dental disease and we are able to perform professional dental cleanings five days a week Monday through Friday). In addition to professional cleaning and polishing, we are able to perform fluoride treatments, dental X-rays, extractions, antibiotic treatment, and oral surgery.

The professional dental cleaning of your pet’s teeth is performed as an anesthetic procedure in the specialized Dental Care Center within our treatment area. Your pet will be admitted in the morning and the majority of pets undergoing dentistry procedures go home in the afternoon or evening of the same day.

After performing a thorough pre-surgical examination and reviewing your pet’s pre-anesthesia blood work results, the doctor will oversee the cleaning of your pet’s teeth by a veterinary technician. While under anesthesia, your pet’s mouth will be thoroughly examined by your veterinarian for decayed teeth, broken and fractured teeth, discolored and missing teeth, ulcers, tumors, and other abnormalities of the teeth, gums, and mouth. The professional dental cleaning involves removal of accumulated plaque and tartar and polishing your pet’s teeth. Your pet is monitored throughout the procedure and recovery period. Pets go home with pain relief medication, antibiotics, and home care instructions.

Ultrasound and X-ray

Ahwatukee Animal Care Hospital uses state-of-the-art medical equipment including ultrasound, ECG, endoscopy, EKG, and digital x-ray. These diagnostic tools help us get a better understanding of exactly what is going on inside your pet.

We can perform diagnostic radiography on any area of your pet: chest, legs, elbows, knees, abdomen, hips, and spine. We also offer OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) radiographs necessary for promoting quality breeding programs. Digital x-rays are crisper and faster than traditional films. They can also be burned to a CD and/or emailed, so they are easier for clients to transfer to a specialist, if necessary.

Our ability to perform high-quality diagnostics in-house saves precious time in diagnosis and treatment.

Laboratory Tests - Ahwatukee Animal Care Hospital

In-House Laboratory

The Laboratory at Ahwatukee Animal Care Hospital provides convenience as well as timely answers to pet owners about the status of their pet’s health. Laboratory tests are critical in making a correct diagnosis of a patient’s medical conditions. Many of our tests and clinical analyses are conducted on our premises by our doctors and/or veterinary technicians. Our laboratory equipment includes microscopes, a chemistry analyzer, a refractometer, an electrolyte analyzer, a hemocytometer, a centrifuge, and more.

We offer a variety of tests ranging from wellness profiling and pre-anesthetic testing to diagnostic work-ups. Our in-house laboratory allows doctors to check blood, urine, stool, and cytologies immediately. This means we are able to offer the best treatment options faster, and in an emergency situation, this can make all the difference. In some situations, your doctor may want to run more specific tests. In these cases, we are able to send more comprehensive panels to our outside lab, these test results are typically back within 72 hours. Once the lab results are obtained, our doctors will develop a care plan specialized to your pet’s needs.

If your are planning on dropping off a sample for our lab, please note urine and stool cannot be more than 12 hours old and must be kept refrigerated, if it is not brought into us immediately. Unless this sample was requested by your veterinarian and the doctor indicated no exam was needed, it is likely you will still be required to bring your pet in for an examination in order to receive medication for any medical condition.

Surgery Suite

At Ahwatukee Animal Care Hospital, we always strive to provide the best possible service. Our surgery suite is an example of our dedication to quality medical care. We have two surgery bays and are fully equipped with monitoring devices and overhead oxygen.

Our main concern is providing quality medical care safely. Therefore, before every sedation or surgery, we perform a pre-surgical examination and pre-anesthesia blood work. This is done in an effort to screen for any hidden health issues or problems that could potentially interfere with a successful surgical outcome. After your pet has been given a sedative, an IV catheter is inserted. An induction agent is given and your pet is intubated. Sedation is maintained with gas anesthesia. We use the safest gas anesthesia and induction products available and our surgical veterinary technicians will be with your pet from sedation thru induction and surgery, to recovery.

During surgery, your pet will be monitored for blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, blood oxygenation, and temperature, as well as being visually monitored by a technician. Throughout the surgery, your pet’s vitals are recorded every five minutes. After your pet has been moved from the recovery area, our health care team continues to provide the care needed for your pet until the doctor discharges him or her from the hospital and into your care.
